The 13th Food Quality & Safety Award ceremony was recently hosted by DuPont Nutrition & Health during the Food Safety Summit in Baltimore, Md. This event celebrated Backyard Farms LLC as the 2013 winner of the annual award. It also provided an opportunity for more than 400 food industry professionals to network and learn about food protection from DuPont, Land O’Lakes and Backyard Farms.
Sponsored by DuPont Nutrition & Health and presented by Food Quality & Safety magazine, the Food Quality & Safety Award is given each year to a North American QA/QC department or program that has made significant improvements in food safety and quality with a positive impact on business results.
"In line with the DuPont global focus on food security, we are very pleased to recognize the proactive approach to food safety taken by companies such as Backyard Farms," said Rob McPheeters, global business director for Diagnostics, DuPont Nutrition & Health. "This award highlights companies who are demonstrating that good food safety practices make good business sense."
This year's winning submission described how Backyard Farms has “designed in” food safety with investments in sustainable technologies that reduce waste and environmental impact, along with employee training that has resulted in zero product returns due to quality or safety concerns. With this award, Backyard Farms joins an elite group of past honorees, including Hormel, Sysco, Tyson and many more.
Paul Mucci, president and chief operating officer, accepted the Food Quality Award on behalf of Backyard Farms. Headquartered in Madison, Maine, the company supplies fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes throughout the northeast United States all year long.
According to Mucci, “Food safety is the most important task of all our operations. Our commitment is understood and executed by each and every employee, and we take great pride in ensuring delivery of the highest safe quality food to the market place.”
A keynote address on the food safety culture at Land O’Lakes, Inc. was delivered by Sara Mortimore, vice president of product safety, quality assurance and regulatory affairs. “Our goal is to have each of our 10,000 employees be quality champions, where each one knows how to do the right things – even when no one is looking,” explained Mortimore.
Rob McPheeters served as the evening’s emcee, and Marian Zboraj, editor of Food Quality & Safety magazine, presented the 2013 award to Backyard Farms.
