Several of the small, medium and large dairy processors who won accolades at this year’s DuPont Qualité Awards, where the best of the best of the SA Dairy Championships are heralded, are supported by DuPont Nutrition & Health, a leader in specialty food ingredients with a strong presence in South Africa. DuPont has been the official sponsor of the Qualité Awards for several years.
The SA Dairy Championships were presented for the 180th time this year. Sixty-eight producers entered 821 products in the categories for butter, cheese, cottage cheese, yoghurt, flavoured milk, dairy dips, ice cream and dairy dessert.
DuPont Nutrition & Health offers a wide range of sustainable, bio-based ingredients and advanced molecular diagnostic solutions to several of the producers who entered for this year’s competition. One of the smaller cheeseries in South Africa that benefits from their products and services is Belnori Boutique Cheesery in Bapsfontein, Benoni. Norman and Rina Belcher form a formidable cheese making team and their superb goat’s milk products have earned them accolades the world over. During the recent DuPont Qualité Awards, they won one of only fifteen prestigious Qualité awards and no less than six SA Champion medals.
“One of the biggest advantages of DuPont is that they – via their local distributor, Dairy Cheret – cater for the small artisanal cheeseries as well,” says Rina Belcher, who is also the founder member of the Southern African Goat and Sheep (SAGS) Milk Processors’ Organisation. “Their proactive service and superior products undoubtedly give us an edge when it comes to production. During the new season we will be trying our hand at making ice cream from goat’s milk and we will do so with their flair for and experience in innovation for support.” Belnori has also won a silver medal at the 2009 World Cheese Awards with their plain feta, in addition to many other local prizes.
According to Darryl Clayton, DuPont Nutrition & Health Sub-Saharan Africa Sales Director, the DuPont™ Danisco® range encompasses the broadest portfolio of ingredients for the dairy industry. “Today, every third cheese obtains its well-defined flavor and texture from our leading cultures,” he explains. “By 2020, DuPont will invest over $10 billion in 4,000 products focused on food solutions. Currently, over 60% of DuPont’s total research investment goes to food. DuPont scientists and business experts are collaborating with food manufacturers and producers worldwide to make food safer, healthier, better-tasting and easier to produce.”
Fair Cape Dairies, Durbanville Cape Town, who garnered seven SA Champion awards, is also a satisfied client. According to Tanya Shaban, new product development, DuPont is on the cutting edge of new technology within the dairy industry. “This, in turn, helps us to keep ahead of the competition and ensures that our products lead in terms of innovation.”
