The site
Danisco Sugar Arlöv is one of Danisco Sugar’s two sugar factories/refineries producing speciality products. Production goes on throughout the year.
The annual production totals approx. 195,000 tonnes of sugar products
- 142,000 tonnes of liquid sugar
- 22,000 tonnes of syrup
- 10,000 tonnes of cube sugar
- 12,000 tonnes of speciality products
- 9,000 tonnes of granulated sugar
- 100 tonnes of molasses
The daily refining capacity is about 850 tonnes of raw sugar. The raw sugar is supplied by Danisco Sugar Örtofta.
In Arlöv we produce sugar for many applications. Some is used in the food industry for making jams and marmalades, preserves, bread, cakes and soft drinks. And some is used in the many specialty sugar products familiar to you from the shops under the Dansukker® brand such as cube sugar, vanilla sugar, flavoured icing sugar, nib sugar, a wide selection of syrups as well as candy sugar, granulated cane sugar and cube sugar produced from cane sugar.
We manufacture tailor-made liquid sugars for many of our industrial customers. These products are developed in close collaboration with the customer. The finished liquid sugars enable the customers to streamline their sweetening process and implement savings. Liquid sugars are shipped out daily by truck or train to customers all over Sweden. The customers' requirements make up the basis for the quality standard of our products. In order to ensure the correct quality of our products, we have a quality control department which carries out approximately 100,000 analyses annually.
The site employs around 167 people. The majority of our employees work in the production e.g. as machine operators, process operators, service engineers (within electrical maintenance or automation) and at the laboratory. Further reading about the Sugar division.
History
Danisco Sugar Arlöv was founded in 1869. The facility originally functioned as a combined refinery and beet mill. Up to 1881, the production was dominated by imports of raw cane sugar, but the site was subsequently converted into a modern facility designed with beets in mind.
In 1896, the site was ravaged by an extensive fire and rebuilt at an unheard-of speed: by November that year the beet campaign was resumed and the refining activities were resumed in March 1897. The last beet campaign at Arlöv’s raw sugar facility was conducted in 1958 and the site has since specialised in refining raw sugar.
Local community & environment
Arlöv is a small village in the municipality of Burlöv just outside Malmoe in Scania, southern Sweden. The municipality of Burlöv has approx. 15,000 inhabitants. Danisco Sugar Arlöv is the biggest industry in the municipality of Burlöv and good relations with the local community are essential for us.
We are in continuous dialogue with local stakeholders with regard to issues of common concern. This includes communicating with local politicians and committees on environmental and technical issues.
Being a major sugar refinery facility there is a widespread interest in visiting us and to study our process. Over the year we have approx. 1,500 visitors coming from a range of areas e.g. schools, universities, grower organisations and politicians. If you are interested in visiting Danisco Sugar Arlöv please send a request via e-mail or give us a call.
