The site

Danisco's headquarters are located in Christianshavn at Copenhagen's fabulous harbour front.

From here the board of directors and the executive board run the company's activities in more than 40 countries across the globe.

Copenhagen is also the headquarters of the following divisions: Sugar, Textural Ingredients and Specialities, just as basic research and venture activities are carried out from here.

About 400 people work at the Danisco headquarters, including 100 people in Danisco Sugar head office functions. The employees work in functions such as

  • Finance
  • Legal affairs
  • Sustainable development
  • HR
  • Marketing
  • Communications
  • IT

The headquarters accommodate several staff associations, including an art society, book club and sports club. The site also has a well-reputed canteen serving green, low-fat lunches for the staff.

Some of the offices are beautifully situated with a view of the harbour and the Black Diamond (the Royal Library).

History

The site on which Danisco's headquarters are located, Appelbys Plads, has been in the possession of the Danish Sugar Factories since the late 19th century.

When the old refinery in Copenhagen burned down, it was decided to build a new sugar refinery on Appelbys Plads due to the possibility of unloading raw sugar shipped in from far-away countries. The characteristic red buildings were built in 1912-13 in the same style as Copenhagen's warehouses.

The buildings were used for refining activities up to 1964, and were hit by stray British bombs during the Second World War killing six people.

From 1964 to 1985 the buildings were used as warehouses until Danisco's present Executive Board in 1989 decided to modernise the preservation-worthy buildings. Both Danisco's management and employees value the quality of the buildings, which offer an interesting and inspiring environment.

Local community & environment
Copenhagen is a modern capital, which aims at taking a leading edge in design, architecture, research and culture. Mediaeval houses and renaissance castles lie alongside modernistic buildings. Since its foundation in the 12th century the city has grown significantly while at the same time preserving its intimacy.

Today the capital counts around 500,000 inhabitants, or 1.5 million if you include the greater Copenhagen area, and is a key power centre in the Øresund region. Copenhagen is not only the centre of Danish business but also the heart of political power and the home of the royal family.

Education
The University of Copenhagen, the oldest of its kind, offers a multitude of studies within health science, law, science, social science and the humanities. Copenhagen Business School offers Denmark's widest range of higher business and language education. Copenhagen also has an international school, high schools and various institutions of higher education.

Child care
Copenhagen and its suburbs offer child-care facilities. Standard opening hours in day nurseries and kindergartens are from 6.30 am to 5.00 pm. Please visit the homepage of the individual municipality for a complete list.

Leisure
The city offers sports facilities of all kinds, outdoor sports grounds, sports centres and swimming pools, and if you are interested in tennis, football, sailing, golf etc. there is always a club nearby. Not far from Danisco you find Tivoli, the world's oldest amusement park, which offers fun for the whole family during the summer season. Danisco proudly sponsors Tivoli's Pantomime Theatre.

Culture
Being the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen accommodates several theatres, including the Royal Theatre where Danisco proudly sponsors the Royal Danish Ballet, and a host of concert places. The city is rich in tourist attractions such as museums and galleries as well as nightlife for everyone, including nightclubs, cafes, bars and restaurants, several of which are Michelin restaurants.

Location

Copenhagen Airport is only approximately 15 minutes away and the Copenhagen central station only 5 minutes away from Danisco's headquarters. There is regular bus transport to the centre of Copenhagen, the airport and the train station.
