The site

Danisco Sugar Nykøbing is Danisco's only beet sugar facility with refinery capacity.

The sugar beets are supplied by approx. 1,700 beet growers and conveyed to the site by lorry or tractor. Around 550 truckloads a day, equal to almost 1.05 million tonnes of sugar beet, are turned into sugar during a campaign.

From the beet fibres left over once the sugar has been extracted, we produce feed products. Danisco's entire annual sugar production is achieved during a three-to-four-month period, called the campaign, extending over some 100 days from end-September to the first part of January when the facility operates around the clock, seven days a week. The facility has a daily processing capacity of 11,800 tonnes of beet.  

The site produces annually (approximately):

  • 182,000 tonnes of sugar (2007/08) of which 24,000 tonnes is refined (2006/07)
    Feed products:
  • 32,500 tonnes of molasses (2007/08)
  • 27,000 tonnes of unmolassed sugar beet pellets (2007/08)
  • 16,000 tonnes of dried molassed shreds  (2007/08)
  • 22,000 tonnes of pressed beet pulp (2007/08)

Approximately half of the granulated sugar is sold to the retail market under the Dansukker® brand while the rest is sold to the food industry. In addition, we manufacture brown sugar and icing sugar. In Gørlev we produce liquid sugar for the non-food industry.

The site employs around 210 people but the workforce is expanded by a contingent labour force of 20 people during the beet campaign.

The majority of our employees work in production e.g. as machine operators, process operators, service engineers (within electrical maintenance or automation) and in the laboratory. Approx. 8 employees work in the administration. The Nykøbing plant also includes the driers and silo functions in Stege, Gørlev and Sakskøbing. Further reading about the Sugar division.

Between the campaigns

Once the campaign is over, the production equipment is overhauled. The maintenance and new installations required after the campaign keep the permanent staff not engaged in the packing and handling of sugar and feed products busy for the rest of the year. This is also the time of the year when the staff receive further training.

History
Danisco Sugar Nykøbing was founded by Edward Tesdorpf in 1884 as a farm-owned enterprise in order, as Tesdorpf put it, to enable "the farm to keep tabs on the entire process from beet growing to the final product". Thus, it was Tesdorpf who introduced the concept of the ”Cooperative Beet Sugar Facility". The facility made raw sugar up to 1953 to the exclusion of all else.

At the beginning of the 1960s Nykøbing was converted into a granulated sugar facility, which was supplemented a few years later by a refinery. In this process all production facilities were concentrated in Nykøbing and the production of unrefined sugar was ended.

In 1964, 3,300 tonnes of beet were being processed daily; today 10,000 tonnes of beet are consumed. Sukkerfabriken Nykøbing Limited was purchased by De Danske Sukkerfabrikker (Danish Sugar) in 1989.

Local community & environment

Nykøbing is situated in the municipality of Nykøbing Falster on the isle of Falster. The community has approx. 25,500 inhabitants. Danisco Sugar is one of the biggest employers in Nykøbing and good relations with the local community are essential to us.

We are in continuous dialogue with local stakeholders with regard to issues of common interest. This includes communicating with the local politicians and committees on environmental and technical matters. It also involves interaction with the local residents, for example by inviting the nearby villages to visit and experience the site from the inside.

Being a major sugar producing facility there is widespread interest in visiting us and studying our production process.

During the campaign we have approx. 2,000 visitors coming from a range of areas e.g. schools, universities, grower organisations and politicians. Nykøbing offers

Child care and education
The town offers child-care facilities. Opening hours in day nurseries and kindergartens vary. Standard opening hours are from 06.30 am to 5.30 pm. Nykøbing has primary/secondary schools and a high school.

Leisure and Culture
The town provides sports facilities for sports associations and residents of the town and there are several museums and a number of ancient monuments in the region.

Nykøbing is only 1½ hour away from Danisco Sugar's headquarters in Copenhagen and Kastrup Airport, offering worldwide connections.
