Nutrition policy

Objective
As the only producer of sugar in the Nordic region and as one of Europe's leading producers, Danisco Sugar is responsible for providing the general public with information on the nutritional aspects of sugar and thus contributing to a balanced, knowledge-based nutrition debate.

The total consumption of sugar per capita has been almost constant in the Scandinavian countries for a number of years. However, an ever larger part of sugar consumption in the western world is indirect, i.e. as an ingredient of industrially produced foods instead of through homemade products. As a supplier, Danisco Sugar has an obligation to enter into dialogue with society's other players on food, food culture, food policy and health/nutrition.

Danisco Sugar believes that a debate on nutrition should be based on the modern lifestyle and the consequent food and exercise habits. Sugar can be a natural part of a varied diet in accordance with the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR). A large daily consumption of sugar - i.e. significantly more than NNR - is not recommendable. If these recommendations are followed, there is no documentation that sugar is directly involved in lifestyle-related illnesses.

Research
Danisco Sugar welcomes scientific research into carbohydrates and nutrition and supports this through membership of the European Committee of Sugar Manufacturers, CEFS. National research is also supported to the extent that Danisco Sugar deems the projects to be suitable to procure new knowledge.

As a consequence of our holistic view on sugar and lifestyle, Danisco Sugar takes a positive attitude to supporting more interdisciplinary research projects on health, lifestyle and food/nutrition, if the research projects meet acknowledged scientific standards.
