We source a limited part of our soy from South America where it is important to avoid negative impacts on biodiversity and local communities. DuPont Nutrition and Health has been a member of RTRS – The Round Table on Responsible Soy since 2008. See also our Position Statement on Deforestation related to the Amazon Forest. We are currently working with NEPCon to further ensure that we source all our soy sustainably from South America.
DuPont Nutrition & Health has been a pioneer in RSPO certified palm oil ingredients. Similar to soy, palm oil plantations can trigger local deforestation issues. Guar beans are the source of guar gum and mainly sourced from India and Pakistan, where they have been harvested for human consumption and cattle feed for thousands of years.
We use wood as a basis for our cellulose gum. Our site in Lenzing in Austria, is a true example of industrial symbiosis, using a waste stream of a local pulp and paper mill as a raw material and returning the residual waste stream to the factory which uses it to generate heat. The primary wood raw materials are certified against FSC and PEFC standards.
Sourced from mainly Morocco, Spain and Portugal and the basis for locust bean gum. Most of the beans are collected from the ground beneath wild or semi wild trees. The trees are grown with very little use of water or fertilizers. DuPont Nutrition & Health wants to support local farmers to apply best practices.
Our alginate and carrageenan products are based on red and brown seaweeds. We source from different places in the world, each with their own local context. Wild seaweed has a great environmental profile, using virtually no irrigation, land, or fertilizers.
