Cosmetics

Danisco offers a number of ingredients to the global cosmetics industry including humectants, moisturising agents, skin conditioning agents, emulsifiers, bulking agents and thickeners.

These ingredients are utilised in a wide variety of product formats covering the full range of cosmetic applications. Danisco’s ingredients can make a vital difference to product stability, functionality and consumer acceptability, as well as offer enhanced potential for premium positioning.

Betaine is used in skin care formulations as a moisturiser and stabiliser due to its unique water binding and cell membrane protective properties. Because of its clearly perceivable ability to improve skin feel and reduce the stickiness of formulations and increase their spreading properties, betaine is ideal for a wide range of cosmetic applications. Recent studies about the osmolyte strategy of betaine in human cells support the role of betaine in maximising moisture.

Betaine also increases the water solubility of active compounds, enabling formulations with salicylic acid and allantoin to be carried out at room temperature. AHA and antiperspirant formulations can also be buffered by betaine.

In surfactant solutions, betaine acts as a foam modifier and increases the foam volume and stability of SLES and amphoterics and improves the after-feel of conditioners.

Betaine is also a useful ingredient in dental products, thanks to its capability of reducing the irritancy of surfactants and for its moisturising effects on mucous membranes.

The clinical and safety data has been performed by utilising Danisco's own scientific team and in cooperation with universities and by using external testing institutes and consultants.
