Rare sugars

Danisco has expertise in separation and purification technologies combined with back integration into raw material production.

This makes us a reliable partner for our customers, who are looking for high quality rare monosaccharides and derivatives. The development of quality control is of utmost importance and we work closely with our partners to assist with method development.

Several of Danisco's rare sugars are manufactured from birch and beech wood hydrolysate using a solvent-free separation process.

Examples of product names include:

  • L-rhamnose MC
  • L-ribose CT
  • L-fucose CT
Application areas

Danisco's rare sugars are used in the pharmaceutical industry as precursors for a wide variety of carbohydrate-based drugs. These include nucleoside analogues, which are used in antiviral applications including:

  • HIV
  • HBV
  • HCV

Another important class of compounds are complex oligosaccharides and oligonucleotides, which may be used as:

  • anti-flammatory agents
  • anti-cancer agents
  • highly specific chronic pain relievers

Danisco has been working extensively to secure supply of chirally pure monosaccharides and developing assays capable of detecting levels of enantiomeric impurity as low as 0.05%.

Danisco's rare sugars are also used as precursors in the production of flavour chemicals. Examples include:

  • natural furanones
  • Maillard reaction savoury flavours

Some of our products have further applications in nutraceuticals.
